Trust God’s Promises and Providence

Each time my mind is filled with wonder over the promises of God, I always think about the beautiful words of the apostle Peter. As he was endeavoring to inspire growth and maturity among his Christian audience, Peter reminded them that God “has granted to us his precious and very great promises” (2 Peter 1:3). Truly, God’s promises are great because they are abundant and relevant to our eternal salvation, and they are precious because God’s people cherish them near to their hearts. If you want to be a happier person, then just spend some time meditating on the priceless promises of God. Our Father is no liar, and He always makes good on His word. We can take comfort knowing God will never let us down, fail to honor His promises, or allow us to go lacking in anything we need to serve Him. Trusting God’s promises and relying more fully upon His providence will un-lock doors to incredible peace of mind!

The apostle Paul absolutely understood the need to trust God’s promises and providence. As he was closing his prison letter to the church at Philippi, Paul wrote a lot about his personal gratitude for the generosity of the Philippian church that was evidenced by their frequent and abundant financial support. This section, though, is more than just a personal note about giving and receiving funds—it contains an important reminder regarding the promises and providence of God. For in-stance, Paul wrote, “I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:18-19). The apostle wants his brethren to know that God has used them as a instrument of His providence. God has used their generosity to providentially aid Paul in his moments of need, and this same God will take care of their needs as well. Paul was so moved by this reality that he actually followed up this with a verse of praise by saying, “to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.” (Philippians 4:20). Yes, praise God for His promises and providence! He takes care of His children!

If we are honest, we would all have to admit that it’s easy to worry, especially about money and making ends meet. While God’s people are never promised great wealth as a bonus for following Him, Christians are assured that they will have every-thing they need. Jesus said, “but seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matthew 6:33-34). When we are tempted to agonize, worry, and grow anxious over finances and our future, we need to fight our fears with faith in God’s promises that He really will providentially take care of His children. The Lord has richly provided everything for our salvation, and He graciously and providentially cares for our well-being each day. So, trust a little more in God promises and providence, and you will experience “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding” (Philippians 4:7) in 2021.
