Eastern Meadows, like many congregations of the Lord’s church, assembles together twice on Sunday to offer congregational worship to God. We meet together for morning worship at 10, and we then reconvene at the church building for evening worship at 5. I’m thankful for Sunday nights! In fact, I love the fact that we have the opportunity to be together again on the Lord’s Day for worship and fellowship. Others, however, might struggle to see the real value of a Sunday night worship service. To some, having such a service might even appear to be monotonous and unnecessary. Someone could even suppose that Sunday evening worship is only for those who can’t make it on Sunday morning. I don’t think any of that. I want to give you some of the reasons why I love Sunday nights, and I hope you share these same feelings too.
I love Sunday nights because they are times of worship. Sure, this one is an obvious point, but it is also an important observation for us to consider. God’s people should love worship and cherish each occasion they have to be with God’s people and offer worship to God. As the sweet singer of Israel said, “I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being (Psalm 146:2). Truly, it is a special opportunity to set everything in the world aside and be able to sing to God, pray to God, and receive the words of God through worship on Sunday evenings. It’s an opportunity I love and enjoy!
I love Sunday nights because they are times of learning. I can’t speak for every local church, but I know we are trying to be more intentional with our Sunday night worship services. For example, when Steve preaches on Sunday nights, he is preaching through the book of Joshua since our young people are studying this book for Lads to Leaders. On the Sunday night when I preach, I use the sermon time to answer previously submitted Bible questions from the congregation. Then, there’s a really unique Sunday evening service that we do once a month where Steve, Time, and I all preach during the service on a certain theme or Bible subject. Each Sunday night is just a little different, but they are all times of learning. As Peter said, we are to be passionately hungering for God’s Word “that by it you may grow up into salvation” (1 Peter 2:2). Our Sunday evening worship services can definitely help to us grow!
I love Sunday nights because they are times of fellowship. When I read the book of Acts, I am so impressed with the early church and their daily fellowship. The Scriptures reveal how they were daily
